Urban Center for the Developmentally Disabled

OVERVIEW
In 1985, the Urban Resource Institute (URI) created the Urban Center for the Developmentally Disabled (UCDD) to provide vocational, job placement, and/or on-site work adjustment training services to young adults who are diagnosed with Mental Retardation, developmental and/or learning disabilities. Located in the East New York section of Brooklyn, UCDD has a program capacity of 130 persons, and serves individuals in the five (5) boroughs that meet the eligibility criteria.

UCDD receives funding from the New York City Department of Mental Health & Hygiene, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services as well as the NYS Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID). UCDD also receives referrals from other community service organizations, which includes VESID sponsored referrals. Specially trained Job Coaches are on staff and provide on-site post-placement support services to improve retention outcomes in order to assist individuals in sustaining full and part-time employment. Program staffing at UCDD includes the: Program Director, Assistant Director, Outreach Coordinator, Job Developer, Job Coaches, and other support staff.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

For over a decade, URI's Urban Center for the Developmentally Disabled has pushed to remove obstacles causing chronic joblessness among hundreds of adults with severe disabilities. Today, with hundreds of units of services already provided, individuals have been placed in positions which include:

Stock/Shipping Clerk  Airport Ramp Agent
Airport Customer Escort  Clerical Assistant
Security Monitor  Maintenance/Porter
Fast Food Utility Worker  Messenger
Cargo Area Worker  Receptionist
Officer Clerk  Cashier
Nurses Aide  Plumber's Helper

Employers may also interview and/or hire from our pool of available job candidates without ever paying a referral or finders fee. UCDD continues URI's commitment to serving individuals who have "aged-out" of special education and through projects such as this, is dedicated to providing unsubsidized, transitional employment opportunities and supports for adult students with learning disabilities.

For those interested in referring potential trainees, or for employers wishing to learn more about how UCDD can meet your employment needs, please call UCDD directly at (718) 342-2121.
