Urban Woman's New Beginning

The Urban Woman's New Beginning (UWNB), established in 2001, addresses the immediate needs of women who, have been battered or who and their children are in imminent danger of domestic violence.

The intent of the program is to help women make the transition through the period of crisis and prepare emotionally, socially, educationally and financially to establish a life independent of their abusers. UWNB brings together resources from a wide range of public and private sources in a professionally managed environment that targets each individual's specific needs.

Placement into the shelter is made largely through a telephone Hot Line which provides counseling and referrals on a 24-hour basis.

"Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury and death to American women. It causes more harm than rapes, muggings and vehicular accidents combined. Each year, an estimated 6 million women are beaten by the men with whom they live. Thirty percent of women who become homicide victims die at the hands of men with whom they have a "family" relationship. Battering, child abuse and sexual abuse are a frightening way of life in countless families."

"Each year about one third of the women murdered in the United States are killed by a husband or boyfriend"
